Introducing LESU paws

We are delighted to introduce the latest concept in Nordic Walking PAWS! Lesu paws are the brainchild of NWUK Instructor Tug Wilson who has always been a pioneer of Nordic walking – one of the first Instructors in the UK he quickly went on to be one of the first to deliver the NWUK programmes and then one of the first to plan trips and breaks for his growing band of regular walkers from South and East London. The former Paramedic and his wife Bibi are passionate about fitness, wellbeing and rehabilitation and they offer innovative classes that include a range of equipment from balance beams and tyres for dragging! This approach has led to a keen eye for detail when it comes to Nordic Walking equipment too and frustrations with the typical rubber paws found on NW poles Tug says “The Lesu ‘Boot’ design arose from daily issues when out Nordic Walking:-

  • Having to remove my paws on certain terrains and popping them back on again
  • Getting dirty hands when removing paws
  • Having to align the paws every time they are put on or if they have swivelled round (especially difficult for newcomers)
  • New paws can be worn out very quickly if not aligned correctly
  • Typical Paws can get lost down drains etc
  • Replacing the paws can be costly for regular Nordic walkers
  • Although pole lights and clip on lights are available – I think it makes sense to have paws that light up in urban environments or when winter walking.LESU

So Tug set to build the LESU  – a unique paw that is brightly coloured, grips at any angle and has an LED light up version that flashes when the light is low and the paw is in use!

Being Tug, every element of the paws have been vigorously tested and various compounds tried ” Some were super grippy but wore out after 40 mins and others would have lasted years but the grip was not right ” he says. The injection moulded material used has now been tested on all terrains, London streets, Brecon Beacons, Dartmoor, South Downs, Jersey, Inca Trail of Peru and Seville and Carmona, Spain. It was never taken off for spike use, had a firm constant grip which could be trusted and was found to have more stability on rough terrain due to a greater surface are being in contact with the ground.

“We even did a comparison test from July to Dec and the difference was huge when used constantly on hard surfaces. A Garmin forerunner was used to measure distance which totalled 564 miles. I think the Lesu boot has at least another 1000 miles of wear remaining, the colour is still strong and the LED are still working – the traditional paw is loose and quite worn down. I would estimate the average ‘club; Nordic walker does one session per week, covering between 3- 4 miles, during the year approx. 144 – 193 hours per year so hopefully, this comparison test shows the improved design and function of the Lesu boot over other makes.” says Tug.

lesu2The flashing lights are a great advert as well as a safety feature – Housed in a separate sealed waterproof unit with a battery life of an estimated 10,000 hours, these little gems also have a  photo cell which means they operate at dusk at dusk, eliminating the need for a switch, and to stop constant flashing a movement sensor only allows the led operation when the pole is planted.Tug explains his inspiration below…

Tug Profile Pic“The LED system came from an idea where my niece walked past me showing off her new trainers which were flashing led lights every time she stepped , I bought her replacements so i could cut away the heel to see how they worked, however it was not until several months later I found a pair where the technology had improved so much that I could house it in a ‘Boot’ for a pole.” He says.

At NWUK we applaud innovation and appreciate the time and passion that Tug has put into the Lesu paw so you will be seeing us ‘flash’ past you at events around the UK in our brightly coloured paws! We have even been promised some purple ones!

Tug has offered that all NWUK Instructors can have two for one on their FIRST order of Lesu paws ( max order 4 pairs) This is to allow you to test them and allow your clients to do the same – Call Lauren on 0333 1234 540 to order but hurry as we have already sold out of some colours of the non LED ones!.  You can view the paws here NWUK store

How’s this for a Testimonial?

I met Tug Wilson for the first time July 2015 when he brought his walking group (MTNordic walkers) to Peru.I was his guide for 12 days in which time we not only visited many Inca sites, but also successfully completed the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu.

The Inca trail is now one of many walking routes where ‘paws’ must be attached to nordic walking and trekking poles, no spikes are allowed due to the erosion the trail will suffer.

This is good for the Inca trail, however it can mean a loss of grip at various sections due to the con-stant changes in terrain, Tug had brought a pair of his Lesu ‘boots’ to use on the trail, I had never seen them previously as he explained he had recently designed them and was using the expedition to Peru as part of the testing

I found them to be ideal for the surface, they proved themselves to be ‘all terrain’ did not have to be adjusted like many others i have seen and gave a firm confident grip on loose dirt, rock and all of our many steps we have.

The first night at camp came as a surprise to not only myself but the porters who work for me, spot-ting tug Nordic walking with the led’s now flashing form dusk showed not only a modern and different design, but for the safety aspect they were invaluable , something I would like all of my future groups to use as when the sun sets we have total darkness and they would be of great advantage to myself and other guides.

I am happy to have been part of a team testing this new product and i am looking forward to being able to use them in Peru very soon.
I wish Tug success in his venture and future ideas he told me about.

Instructor Tip

If you regularly lead classes in an area with a very weak mobile phone signal, you may still be able to text the emergency services. To utilise this facility, you must first register your phone with the emergency services. Text REGISTER to 999; then follow the instructions in the reply text.

Remember hand-with-a-mobile-phone_318-38051to also re check the signal on your favourite routes, especially if you have changed your mobile phone  provider since you last risk assessed. One Instructor in a remote location told us she only conducts certain walks if her walk leader is present because between them they have coverage of the whole route!

tablet oneA Message for NWUK Delivery Partners

The Team at NWUK HQ know that no business should ever rest on its laurels and never embrace change (no matter how painful it may seem) – success comes from understanding what potential clients want and adapting accordingly. That’s why we have spent two years developing the new search and book portal that puts them in the driving seat and also makes the whole enquiry/booking process simpler for our Delivery Partners.

We know that it’s difficult for an Instructor to change an established format and we appreciate that it’s also a huge learning curve for some of you but the public are voting with their fingers and this January we have had the proof we needed that this IS the way forward! We also know you might not take our word for it so maybe it will help you to hear the views of one of our longest serving DPs who was VERY reluctant to change and another who describes herself as a technophobe!

Take a minute to listen to their views and try to think beyond your current customers (who will adapt as you can see) and think of how you can progress in the future and be part of something unique, exciting and professional.

Here are their honest views ……..

We love these strapless poles at NWUK and truly believe no Instructor should be without at least one pair in the kit bag. We are also excited by the introduction of a 3 piece EXERSTRIDER which is going to be a hit with those who use them for rehabilitation and balance. Great for use with a range of clients who simply cant grasp the strap utilisation or maybe are at risk of falls dues to balance conditions.

Join our network and be part of the bigger picture

freedom-card-benefits-2015Our delivery partner network is going from strength to strength and we are looking for Instructors who want to be part of this exciting National scheme. If you feel you would like to benefit from more support, a range of business tools and additional training plus the opportunity to deliver our award winning FREEDOM programme, give us a call today. 0333 1234 540

In the meantime this quick overview and an even more in depth Q and A click through should help you to understand more about the FREEDOM programme and delivery partner network and how you can get involved.

What is the network?Planner

It is a group of instructors and projects who have chosen to represent NWUK in their area by delivering the NWUK bespoke programmes rather than being an independent NWUK Instructor who would design their own teaching plans and structure. In general network instructors are Individuals who are seeking to build comprehensive business models with the benefits of tried and tested processes and the support of our team. By standardising what they deliver we can also help them succeed by centrally promoting the programmes and even negotiating contracts for them to deliver see 1LIFE LEISURE CENTRE CONTRACT  and BOURNEMOUTH UNI CONTRACT. Both of these were negotiated by NWUK but the local delivery partners gain the work and income.

Delivery partners do invest in additional training, (up to 4 business days plus other modules) and the tools which help them operate professional programmes. These include, enhanced listing on NWUK website, a personal website, marketing tool kit, client management & booking system plus credit card and direct debit facilities and designated support on all aspects of their business. They also work together as a team and support other local Instructors who may not want to have such comprehensive tools.

As the network expands we are building in Regional support and a mentoring process where successful delivery partners support new Instructors and become tutors and assessors for our education team. See this regional website DORSET NORDIC WALKING

What is the FREEDOM programme ?

ukactive-winner-2014The award winning FREEDOM programme is a specific way of delivering Nordic walking technique in a set formula based on the principles of behaviour change . Rather than simply focussing on the technique, our experts have designed the lesson plans to empower each individual to fully understand each movement and to learn how to build technique up in ‘layers’ in order to gain the results they want. Using a proven method of delivery, the programme has a profound effect on how clients view Nordic walking and also directly affects their long term adherence. It concentrates on intensity, progression and ensuring results whilst understanding the key drivers for each client in order to provide the right amount of motivation and tuition.Delivery partner Instructors are given lesson plans for a taster session and the 4 session course plus full materials such as brochures and freedom passports which provide incentives and benefits for their clients too. Included in the training to deliver the programme are other key processes such as enquiry handling skills, how to design a full schedule of classes and even building your brand identity, unique selling points and pricing strategy. In short – this programme answers all the questions generally asked by an Instructor who has just qualified or has tried to get established but is struggling to attract or retain clients.

Why are all Instructors who qualify with NWUK not immediately in the network?

As a fitness training company we provide very cost effective training but whilst, unlike most training companies, we do also promote our Instructors via our website search listing (over 1.1 m hits per year) and extensive media coverage (13 m readership in 2 months), we simply can not include the additional support, materials and training in our basic course cost. We also appreciate not everybody wants to  build a business and many simply use it in their day jobs or add to existing models such as Pilates or weight management groups where they may already have some tools and even an existing client base.  We provide hours of support and training as well as the software, websites, marketing tool kit and even the costs of FREEDOM PASSPORTS and we also help by spreading the costs of these into monthly payments. Another reason we can not include the FREEDOM programme into our instructor training courses is because our level 2 qualification is a recognised fitness Industry standard which means we have to ensure that all of our Instructors are able to create their own teaching plans for teaching nw technique and are simply not given a set process to follow. Assessment criteria requires them to be able to plan their own lessons. As our bespoke FREEDOM programme (and the other programmes) are in a set formula with teaching plans, it is therefore not possible for us to include these in our initial Instructor training at the moment.

What benefits do customers gain from the FREEDOM PASSPORT?cotswold_outdoor2011-2-300x196

The FREEDOM PASSPORT is used to help the customer to understand the skills they have mastered and the level at which they are recommended to walk. It is a Nationally recognised symbol that somebody has completed the FREEDOM programme. Similar to  the PADI diving standard, it signifies they have completed basic tuition and are safe to attend regular walks at the correct level. It also New_rectangle_Rohan_Logo_cmykprovides them with a code which enables them to book into suitable classes with any participating instructor right across the UK. Each Instructor teaches the same process using our ‘gear’ system and the client is empowered to understand their correct level plus the session icons (see below). As their par q is also held securely on line this allows the Instructors to ensure they are able to cope with the session/walk booked before they turn up too. In addition the FREEDOM PASSPORT includes access to FREE membership of NWUK which in turn gives them 10% of any items in the NWUK store plus other benefits such cotton-tradersas 15% off in Cotswold Outdoors and other discounts for everything from Hotter shoes to holidays and even races and festivals. This membership is brand new and is available for purchase to all Nordic walkers without FREEDOM PASSPORTS (or cards) too. We will be launching it fully in the coming weeks when everything is in place.

A great way to tempt in new customers or simply pep up your winter classes is to run specific SKI FITNESS courses that can be attended by both those that can Nordic walk and complete novices. Instructors who ran these last year were delighted that many newcomers who came along purely to get fit for their annual trip to the slopes were completely sold on the benefits of Nordic walking and became fit drill

The NWUK SKI FIT PROGRAMME is no ordinary ‘Get fit for the slopes course’ as seen advertised in many a gym at this time of year – it’s an outdoor, rigorous, progressive course based on sound coaching principles and put together by SKI FITNESS expert and NWUK Tutor, Nicky Parsons.

The course covers all aspects of winter sport fitness:-
•            Balance
•            Weight Transfer
•            Stamina
•            Endurance
•            Strength
•            Technique

This makes it ideal for snowboarders, cross country skiers and downhillers alike and is guaranteed impact on both their performance and enjoyment once out on the snow.

One customer on return from her Ski holiday last year wrote to Martin, her instructor, because she had been delighted that she had skied for longer and recovered faster than on previous trips and felt she had spent less time on her backside!

Nicky is a high profile cross country ski coach and leads gruelling ski touring expeditions around the world and she has used this vast experience to develop a set teaching process with easy to follow drill cards that make sure every client continues to improve week on week.

If you would like to teach the NWUK SKI FIT PROGRAMME you will need to attend a one day intensive training session with Nicky where you will learn the unique drills and how to add progression according to the needs of your clients.

The unique programme comes with branded promotional materials and lesson cards
