Love Actually………… – By Julie Barnes

It’s that lovely but frustrating time of year again where you really want to buy something special for your loved ones but, inevitably, if you are anything like me you will be stuck for ideas or will end up buying the same old thing. At best you will swap vouchers – at worst socks (unless they are Nordic Walking socks of course in which case they are a great present, and you can get them here!). Continue reading

Walking in a Winter Wonderland!

Walking in a Winter Wonderland!

As the clocks go back, the nights draw in and the temperature drops, the temptation to stay indoors becomes greater – But there is no reason why you can’t still enjoy the British countryside and the benefits of Nordic Walking. There’s an old saying “there is no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing” so with that in mind, here are some tips on staying safe this winter. Continue reading

NWUK membership – a bright idea

One of the newly added benefits of Nordic Walking UK membership is 10% discount off LEDlenser head torches.

Martin Christie, founder of Nordic walking in the UK, runs Exercise with Friends Nordic Walking Club in London. Here’s what he says about Ledlenser head torches:

‘One of our clients purchased a LED Lenser H7R rechargeable head torch two winters ago and within weeks more than half our regular group had followed suit, including me. Collectively, we had tried a number of brands, models and price points but found that the quality of the LED Lenser outshone all competitors. If you think it’s a car coming over Hampstead Heath at night, you’re wrong; it’s a group of Nordic walkers!’

Membership is only £9.95 but if you have completed the FREEDOM programme and have a unique CC code you can join for FREE for the first year (£2.50 p and p for the membership pack). You can sign up using your CC code at nordicwalking.co.uk

Nordic walking Autumn breaks

The stunning Dorset coastline

As the excitement of the Olympics dies away and the end of summer holidays draws ever closer, don’t despair because that means we are heading into the most glorious nordic walking season!

AUTUMN is perfect for nordic walking and NOW is the time to book a relaxing nordic walking break – read on for a suggestion of where to go this year inspired by seeing stunning Weymouth on the TV as it hosted the sailing events.

DORSET

This stunning county has NO motorways, NO Cities and miles and miles of stunning world heritage coastline, famous for it’s fossils.Inland, the rolling hills are glorious at any time of year but in the Autumn they are breathtaking.

One of the best areas for walking is on the ISLE OF PURBECK which is often missed by holiday makers heading for the traditional seaside resorts further along the coast. Not technically an island but bordered by wonderful coastline on three sides and a river on the fourth it feels like another world! Easy to get to, yet tranquil with areas of outstanding natural beauty around every corner this area of DORSET is blessed with footpaths that cry out for nordic walkers. From the South west coastal path to the Purbeck way and Wareham forest walks the sceneray incoropates everything from sweeping sand to rugged heathland. Here are two of our favourite walks plus information about NORDIC WALKING breaks in the area.

CORFE CASTLE TO SWANAGE VIA NINE BARROW DOWN

This route is 5.5 miles and you can either pop back to the delightful Corfe Castle on the steam railway or take a number of other routes back if you want to make a day of it! The route heads out of the Village and up on the downs where you can take in views of Poole Harbour and the Isle of Purbeck in it’s full glory.

For full info on the walk click here

KIMMERIDGE BAY TO LULWORTH COVE

This stunning walk takes you along the South West coastal path and provides breathtaking views of the Isle of Portland where the sailing events took place. For more information visit the walk 4 life website

NORDIC WALKING TUITION WEEKENDS

If you fancy learning to Nordic Walk whilst away on a weekend break either in Dorset or elsewhere, remember that our holiday pages are packed with information about specific breaks and our Instructors based in tourist areas are often more than happy to provide tuition if booked in advance click here

Here is one ideal break we found for you if this article has inspired you to visit the Isle of Purbeck.

Hillview Cottage Corfe Castle

HILLVIEW COTTAGE

This little cottage in Corfe Castle is owned by an NWUK Instructor so you have the choice to simply book your break and make use of the maps and local knowledge provided OR you can book a ‘Learn to Nordic Walk’ break and gain your NWUK competence card. The Cottage sleeps 4 and is nestled close the castle with views of the surrounding downs – for more info click here

Multi Functional Pole – Fusion

It is well known that you can use a Nordic Walking pole for Trekking, but NOT the other way round.  The reason is simple – you need the specific hand strap to perform the technique correctly and Trekking poles do not come with this.  However, The ‘clever chaps’ at Gabel have come up with a great solution which comes with attachments for both – the Fusion. From unfit smoker to challenge winner – Stewart’s story

Stewart with his new Gabel Inverso Alu poles

When Stewart McFarlane was smoking heavily it did at least make him go up and down stairs every time he popped out for a cigarette at work!

Once he made the decision to quit in 2007 however, he piled on the weight and realised he was in poor health and not active at all. This is his story about how he gradually introduced walking and nordic walking into his daily routine and how an NWUK challenge inspired him to cover 889 miles in 5 months! Continue reading
