Walk Description:
The walk begins with a climb to the far end of St Catherine’s Hill before descending down to Town Common. As the common lies on a floodplain, it may not always be accessible.
From here, a long, flat trail stretches ahead along a former railway line. The landscape is varied, with areas of heathland and pockets of acid bog as you approach the Avon Valley.
At the end of this section the return route begins finishing with a steep ascent. The walk then continues along the top of St Catherine’s Hill, offering stunning views stretching as far as the Isle of Wight, Hengistbury Head, and Christchurch Priory.
This part of the route includes uneven ground with exposed tree roots. A winding path then leads back down the hill to the starting point.
St Catherine’s Hill is steeped in history, featuring four Bronze Age tumuli and was also used by the Romans as a lookout point. It is an excellent reserve for native reptiles, particularly the sand lizard.
The coniferous woodland covering the hilltop was introduced in the 1960s.
As the valley can be wet, flies may be an issue in warmer months, so insect repellent or long sleeves are recommended.
Due to the hilly nature of St Catherine’s Hill, there are options to adjust both the steepness and length of the walk.
The total distance is just under five miles.
There is an option to meet for coffee afterwards at The Bunker, located in the parade of shops by the car park where we begin. Toilets are available behind the café.
If you don't want to park in the public car park there is parking on the roads near the parade of shops.
