Walk Description:

Join us for a 10km walk starting out from the car park along the track bed of the disused Glasson Dock – Lancaster Branch Line.

We will enjoy views looking back into Glasson and up the river Lune.

Hopefully the hedgerows will be full of flowers to line the path. From here we will walk towards a lovely little hamlet called Stodday, and then proceed towards the canal.

Once we get onto the towpath it becomes clear we are walking through a cutting, which is 1 mile in length and cut through glacial deposits. It is a haven of wildlife, let's see if we can spot damsel flies and even kingfishers.

Once we leave the canal we walk through fields and a small wood back to the start.

Chance of encountering cows as we walk across the fields as we do pass through a farm.

The Glasson/Lancaster railway was built in 1883 to connect the dock to the rest of the network at Lancaster. Glasson Dock was opened in 1787 as part of the port of Lancaster, was moving 10,000 tonnes a day to Isle of Man amongst other places.

The railway was low lying and prone to flooding, the dock slowly declined and the good services stopped in 1964. Stodday looks as though it has connections with Ashton Hall and was known as Ashton with Stodday.

Bridge 91 on the Lancaster canal is the majestic entrance to the start of the deep cutting which is a mile long, and 30 feet deep, cut through glacial deposits to avoid a long detour. When you leave the cutting at the north end you can see the start of Lancaster.

It is advisable to wear a bum bag with a water bottle or hydration pack. Do bring a high energy snack to have on the hoof or as soon as we finish. Wear comfortable clothing that suitable for the weather. Do wear sturdy grippy shoes.

We respect people`s busy agendas and do like to start promptly. Please arrive 5 minutes early for your class and be ready to start on time.
