Walk Description:

Join us for this 9.3km walk from the canal side at Foulridge, the end of the tunnel, along the towpath to Salterforth. It is a lovely stretch of the canal.

You can see quite a bit of the countryside to the right of you and in front as you walk along.  From the canal at Salterforth, walk through fields gaining some height to give you lovely views looking towards the Skipton area.

Will experience the little stone slip through gate/stile, I guess not big enough for sheep to wander through.

We will walk along the side of the Slipper Hill reservoir, from here a short walk to the start of the Foulridge tunnel and then walk back into Foulridge another glorious view on the way.

Foulridge Tunnel or also known as the mile tunnel at 0.93 miles. Building started in 1770, took over 5 years. After the opening the “ leeds Intilligencer” described it as the most complete work of its kind in Europe. Having no towpaths, vessels traversed the tunnel by legging. That practice ended after a legger drowned a double ended steam tug was introduced. This was replaced by a diesel tug.

To ensure the boats would not meet head on there was a telephone system this was replaced in 1963 by traffic lights.

In 2017 the canal and river trust allowed unpowered craft such as canoes and kayaks to use the tunnel – for them it is the longest tunnel in the country. Slipper Hill Reservoir built to supply the canal with water Lake Burwain formerly Foulridge lower reservoir started out as a canal reservoir. One of the two reservoirs that used to top up the canal
