Walk Description:
A cicular walk from Breamore around the eastern edge of Cranborne chase.
This walk is just under 5.5 miles and will take about 2.5 hours. It is mainly on grassy paths which can be overgrown.
Starting at the village of Breamore we pass 17th century brick built cottages, mostly thatch and timber framed on our way up into a wood.
Exiting the wood we climb uphill to the village of Whitsbury passing horses on the way.
Going downhill the countryside opens onto rolling landscapes with extensive views over Hampshire and Wiltshire.
There is a stile before an uphill section, this area is on grass paths.
Taking a slight detour we can visit the Miz Maze. this is one of only eight surviving historic turf mazes in England. It is 800 years old and cut into chalk. It is in a copse of yew and hazel trees.
Into the ancient Breamore woods we go downhill past Breamore House. This is an Elizabethan Manor house noted for its collection of paintings and furniture.
The walk finishes back at the cafe. This is a very welcoming place with a fire in Winter. Toilets nearby.
Tickets for Breamore House and the Countryside museum can be purchased together for an afternoon visit. Out of season please check availability.
The Saxon church of St Mary's is just round the corner and was built in ad 980.
Please wear suitable footwear for uneven terrain.
