Walk Description:

Join us for this 12 km walk along the Leeds and Liverpool canal from Parbold to Wigan.

The heart of the Douglas valley, for much of the walk the River Douglas will keep us close company. Passing through Appley Bridge and Gathurst under the M6 that you will have travelled along many times.

Walking through Crooke where we might see two of the original barges, before arriving in Wigan alongside the famous ‘Wigan Pier’.

Walk to Wigan Wallgate railway station, to get the train back to the start. Interesting stretch of canal.

Appley bridge Deep Lock - Appley Bridge canal locks, two shallower locks are disused. The lock in use is the older and deeper. The other locks were built to conserve water but also to speed up traffic as the deep lock took a while to go through. From here back towards Liverpool is a 27 pound all the way to Liverpool.

Gathurst – Dean House Locks. Where built in 1774 to allow boats to journey upstream to wigan by joining the river at this point from the then unfinnished canal. A few wharfs were created on the south side of the river connected via wagon ways to Orrell Pit from the 1770’s. All tolls were collected at Dean House.

Navigation Inn – built no earlier than the 1850’s to serve canal traffic.
