Walk Description:

The walk goes up to the top of St catherine's hill then descends down to Town Common. This walk is accesible from late Spring but does have a wet area to cross. The common is on a flood plain.

A long flat trailway stretches out ahead where the old railway line used to be. This area consists of dry heathland, humid, wet heathland with areas of acid bog towards the Avon Valley.

At the end of this is the return route which does become very steep at the end.

The walk then goes along the top of St Catherine's Hill with stunning views as far as the IOW, Henistbury Head and Christchurch priory.

This area has tree roots. A path wanders down the hill on a gentle descent back to the start.

St Catherines's hill is steeped in history, there are four Bronze age tumuli. The area was also used by the Romans for lookout towers.

A good reserve for all the native reptiles especially the sand lizard.

The coniferous woodland that covers the top of the hill was introduced from the 1960's.

Option for coffee together at The Bunker in the parade of shops at the carpark where we meet. Toilets at the back of cafe.

Because of the wet area in the valley biting flies can be a problem so spray needed or long sleeves.

Good boots as wet area to cross just before the trail way.

Due to the hilly nature of St Catherine's hill there are various options for the steepness of the walk and the length.

This walk is 4.5 miles approx depending on route taken.

Location Notes:

Please park in the free carpark and meet near The Bunker cafe. Option to go in for coffee after walk.
