NW Brock in Spain!

Published:

What a great week we had in Mijas!  The weather couldn’t have been better and we had some great walks, thanks to our guides Juan and William.  They were very impressed with our fitness level !  Apparently we got up those hills (and they were steep!) in half the time of any other clients they’d

Isle of Wight Annual Walk 2023

A great day out on the IOW!  We were lucky enough to have the perfect weather – warm but not too hot and a brilliant breeze!  We started our adventure at Lymington and had a late breakfast on the ferry over to Yarmouth.  The walk took us along the old railway to Freshwater Bay – […]

We had a great, 9 mile walk on Tuesday along the coastline from Chewton Bunny to Mudeford Quay then got the little ferry over the Hengistbury Head where we had a lovely walk and coffee stop at the top of the hill with views!  We were grateful for part cloud cover to keep the temperature […]

A good time was had by all on our recent trip to Chamonix!  Weather was variable – ranging from hot and sunny to an arctic storm!  The Nordic ski-ing was challenging in difficult conditions and everyone did brilliantly – some had never been on skis before, so a real achievement!  Our instructor, Julia, was absolutely […]

Meet the Team

Suzanne Madden

Role: Instructor

Suzanne moved to the New Forest with husband Trevor in 2010 and is passionate about the area with all its beautiful walks. Once she discovered the benefits of Nordic Walking, she trained to become an instructor and has established a very successful and social club where people can come along and share her passion.

She is also trained to deliver MSE (Muscle Strength and Endurance) exercise programmes which are often added at the end of a workout walk.
One of Suzanne’s biggest loves is dogs and the club enjoys the company of several of our four legged friends who add to the enjoyment of the walks!
Other hobbies include ski-ing, water ski-ing, keeping fit, dancing and eating and drinking!

Trevor Madden

Role: Instructor

Trevor qualified as a NWUK Instructor in 2014 and loves nothing better than helping people get the most from Nordic Walking.  His in depth research of the benefits of correct Nordic Walking technique have helped him to help our members get the most out of this fantastic activity.

He is also trained as an Isometric Instructor and is able to offer training in this highly efficient muscle building technique.

From his many years as a business coach, Trevor has great empathy with people from all backgrounds and ages.

Sue Gravells

Role: Instructor

Sue Gravells is a part-time fully accredited Nordic Walking UK instructor delivering walks in the New Forest East area, mostly around Ashurst, Colbury, Beaulieu and Lyndhurst. Sue joined us through lockdown as she adapted to her new working lifestyle at home and is a welcome addition to the team, particularly with her enthusiasm for supporting others to increase their fitness and her love of the Forest. Sue has lived with her husband in Ashurst for over twenty years and as a mountain bike enthusiast, as well as a professional personal development coach who walks with her coaching clients, she knows her way around the trails – and the cafes!

Shirley Clinkaberry

Role: Walk Leader

Shirley joined Nordic Walking Brockenhurst when she retired from teaching to originally fill in some time, make new friends, improve general fitness and enjoy the beautiful local area.
She soon found Nordic Walking became very important to her well being and before she knew it she was training to be a local walk leader which she thoroughly enjoys.
Now between Nordic Walking , family life, and grandchild care she finds her life is very busy, positive and fulfilling.

Testimonials

from members of Nordic Walking New Forest

Changed my Life!

"I have walked daily all my adult life, so thought I was relatively fit.

I started Nordic Walking in November 2022 as much to experience the New Forest as to benefit my health. The difference in me between then and now is astonishing. I have lost two and a half stone (alongside eating a balanced, nutritious diet), I now welcome hills instead of dread them, and I can do a workout walk and hold a conversation at the same time. When I first started, I couldn't even do this on a gentle walk. In addition, my confidence has increased so much, I have made a whole group of new friends, and I have got to know and love parts of the New Forest that I had not visited before.  I cannot recommend Nordic Walking Brockenhurst highly enough, it has honestly changed my life for the better."

Sue

Health Benefits!

I have had asthma for several years.  Since I began Nordic walking with Suzanne my breathing has improved and my general health overall.   My asthma specialist has remarked how successful the walking has been in controlling the symptoms, he recommends it for all who need to improve their health as a way of helping to control the potential development.

Tricia

Healthier and Happier!

I can vouch for this wonderful group and brilliant and lovely instructor Suzanne. Started on a taster on Jan 6th 2024 and have not looked back. Love the walks. Really friendly people and have already got fitter and feel overall healthier and happier. What better place to walk than the beautiful New Forest. Give it a go you will not regret it I promise.

Lisa

A great experience!

Suzanne is a professional teacher and guide who manages to make exercise enjoyable! A walk that I would otherwise find demanding becomes exhilarating, and the chance to explore new areas of the Forest in a relaxed, social environment is very special experience.

Sally

Thoroughly enjoyable!

Yes indeed, I really did thoroughly enjoy your lesson and thought it was truly excellent! Just what I was looking for.  Very well structured, well paced with lovely clear explanations and instructions. I was delighted that we were staying put, in a particularly suitable spot, and really trying to get to grips (!) with the basic techniques. With anything new, I really like to know what I'm doing or should be doing -- whether I can do it is another matter but with good instruction at least I'm in with a chance! So my thanks again to both yourself and Trevor and I look forward to seeing you for lesson two next Tuesday.

Mo

Simply the Best!

As an east-of-the Hamble resident, thanks to Suzanne's responsiveness, warm welcome and on-boarding skills, I'm relearning the Power of Poles with the New Forest group. Loving it!

Scott

Great all round!

With Suzanne guiding us Nordic Walking is a brilliant way of keeping fit, making friends and experiencing our beautiful New Forest.

Hilary

Fitter and Losing Weight!

Having just retired I wanted to get fit after a life time of sitting down before it was too late. Nordic walking has given me that chance.  It is fun, not too difficult and after only a few months I feel much fitter and am losing weight.

Tricia

Thank you Nordic Walking!

Apart from the social side of regularly meeting up with friends, the wonderful New Forest area, the great upper body exercise, I have to say the biggest gain is posture. So thank you Nordic Walking.

Phillip

Dropped a belt size!

Nordic walking has done wonders for my fitness and stamina - developed muscles I didn't know I had !  I've even dropped a belt size!

David

Great for Posture and Fitness!

I have been nordic walking for 7 months and I am amazed what a difference it has made to my posture and fitness level. I had an old shoulder injury and was nervous that it might be aggravated by using the poles. In fact it has helped to give me more movement in the shoulder. A bonus I didn't expect! It is great walking over the forest and the adventure walks are great fun".

Patricia

Great Results!

The results speak for themselves. I have dropped a dress size and my body shape has completely changed!
Most people consider this to be a older person's activity but it is far from it!
Once we were shown how, it was easy to get the technique right.

Sara

Totally Converted!

I just love Nordic walking. You can do it at your own pace and with lots of different people so it’s fun, social and at whatever exercise level fits for you. What’s not to like? And Suzanne takes her teaching seriously, so you’ll get good training, plus advice, hints, tips and help to order poles and wrist bands.

She also organises a series of walks, at different levels and at different places each week, so what you chose to do is up to you. There is lots of choice, so a perfect way to build mobility, keep fit, get fitter and have a lot of fun at the same time!

But if you’d asked me about Nordic Walking a year ago I’d have just laughed about people with poles – no longer – totally converted.’
