Walk Description:

Join us for a 10km walk around the reservoirs of Longridge.

We will firstly walk up out of the town looking at some old terraces on the way. We can also start admiring the views out towards Parlick and all around. We can make a slight detour to enjoy the views even more.

We will walk round the 5 reservoirs. Also, along the way we will walk along a Roman road called Written stone lane.

On our way back into Longridge we will see some more of the old Longridge.

Preston originally had water from springs in the Alston area and a reservoir was built in grimsagh in 1835. The first Upper Dilworth was built about the same time for water from Longridge fell. As water demand increased it was collected from the Bowland fells into the Alston reservoir completed in 1842. Demand from Preston incresased so next was Spade, after years of drought the other Alston reservoir was built. The last of the reservoirs to be built was the other spade coming into use in the late 1950’s. But four of the reservoirs 2 spade and 2 Alston have been underused because they haven't been needed, so they are being connected to the regiond network by a 6mile tunnel. So, build a large underground aqueduct taking the water to Franklaw where it will be treated before entering the huge network of pipes which connects communities from Cumbria to Crewe

Written stone Lane takes its name from a large slab of stone on the wayside.

It is essential to register and book in advance online.
