Walk Description:
A walk from the village of Hampreston.
Starting from the beautiful All Saints church it is a level walk across a field to reach Longham Lakes.
We cross behind High Mead farm on the way. They are a therapeautic farm working with co-farmers growing crops and looking after animals. There is a shop on site selling their produce. There are occasional open days. They have goats and alpacas along with other animals.
When we reach Longham Lakes we will go all the way round before returning across Hampreston field. There are two stiles. This side can be wet with long grass. (Trousers suggested.) This area is prone to flooding so access is seasonal. For the Sept walk expect the path on the return to be soft but overgrown. Both paths in can be bumpy. Please wear sturdy boots.
The paths around the Lakes are excellant. There is a public toilet at the far side which we can pass.
Longham Lakes are close to the river Stour. The lakes were for gravel extraction originally and the large lake was flooded in Feb 2010.
When the North reservoir was fillied in 2002 the site became interesting for bird watching. There are more than 140 species who visit.
Very popular for fishing and photography.
I have seen otters here.
The lakes are managed by the South West Lakes Trust and members can park in the on site car park.
Membership is £35 annually. Any Walx members who have parking permits and want to join us just for the Lakes let me know so we can meet you.
Arriving back at the church our route takes us through the church yard and back to the cars.
Parking is by kind permission of Rev Dom Meering.
Limited numbers of cars, share if able. In the event of a service on the day of the walk we will need to park in the village as close to the curb as possible. The village is narrow.
Location Notes:
Please park in the first car park of the church. The church is on your left as you drive through the village.
