Walk Description:
Join us for a 10 km walk, along the Leeds and Liverpool canal from Rishton, past the centre point of the canal at Church, up to Clayton Le Moors.
Nice spot for lunch. As we pass through Clayton le moor, visit Mercer Park before walking towards Oakenshaw Weir where they have built a bypass channel for migrating salmon.
Along the greenway for a short way past Great Harwood, which was once part of the Great Harwood loop line before returning on the canal.
Oakenshaw Weir – built to provide water for the print works built about 1844. Calico Cotton.
Mercer Park - was once the grounds of Mercer House, Oakensure most notable resident – John Mercer, dye and fabric chemist. He is remembered in the word ‘mercerisation’ a process used in textile finishing.
Great Harwood Loop - originally diverged from the East Lancashire Line just outside Blackburn and passed through the villages to Padiham. Line had 3 stations, was reported to be the most expensive line per mile that the L&YR owned and passed through some beautiful countryside.
