Walk Description:

Meet at the FREE car park adjacent to the Puffing Billy Café, Great Torrington. Post code EX388JD

We’ll kick start our senses (and our body) with a warm up in the shelter of the road bridge before setting off along the Tarka trail towards Bideford. On the way we will hopefully catch a glimpse of the heron fishing in the weir.

We will climb up onto the Rolle canal and follow the towpath until we reach Reeds field which we will cross and then begin our upward journey following a well-defined pathway into the heart of the Torrington common.

Along the way we have the opportunity to observe at first hand nature at its best while taking in the sights and sounds of the birds/squirrels and other wildlife going about their business.

We follow and cut across numerous named pathways, mostly hidden amongst the canopies so offering a good deal of shelter from the elements all year round.

As we reach the pinnacle of our walk and if extremely lucky we may even catch a glimpse of the treasured Fritillary butterflies which breed in this area of the pathway.

From here we tread carefully as we descend the slope onto a set of steps that lead us down onto another well-trodden pathway which we follow down towards the common stream, turning right at a junction we now find ourselves heading back to our start point by following the stream, moving around the various ponds until we reach the centenary bridge.

From here it’s uphill to the main road and back to the Puffing Billy where we will complete our cooldown and maybe enjoy some light refreshments.
