Walk Description:

Join us for a 9.5km walk from the St Ives estate in Bingley, walking towards the Leeds and Liverpool canal to see the grade 1 set of locks, the Bingley 5 rise. 250yrs old earlier in the year. The walk up to the top of the locks will give you an indication as to how deep they are.

From here we will walk back towards the St Ives estate and head up a tarmac/ cobbled old lane onto the moor to look at an outcrop of rocks to which one has got the name of Druids Altar.

Continuing further along the moor, getting good views before entering the woodland and descending back to the car park.

Walking past the memorial to Lady Blantyre and the Coppice Pond. St Ives Estate.

The estate was purchased in 1635. Previously known as Harden Grange. The Ferrands where a prominent Bingley family. Sarah inherited the property from her uncle and passed it on to her son when she died in 1854. William changed the family name to Ferrand and is responsible for helping to design the estates 19th century landscape.

Pack horse Bridge – historically a significant crossing point over Harden Beck. Was constructed alongside the historical ford across the beck in 1723 replacing a previous wooden bridge. Two contractors where paid £10 to build the bridge and to maintain it and keep it in good order for 7 years.

5 rise locks, Leeds and Liverpool canal. - steepest flight of locks in Uk. The intermediate and bottom gates are the tallest in the country. Grade 1 Listed.

Druids Altar. The St Ives area is known to have been inhabited from the neolithic or Bronze age from Articfacts found.
