Walk Description:

Join us for a 6.7km walk round the historical and redeveloped Salford Quays.

First heading past the Blue Peter Gardens, then as walk round the Erie basin, we learn how busy the quays where with all the imports and exports.

Leaving the quays for a short time we visit Ordsall Hall, a lovely old hall which is now enveloped by all the new development. Take time to look around the hall.

From here we walk along the Manchester ship canal eventually passing the Imperial war Museum, again we can take the time to look round.

Crossing back to media city by way of the Media city footbridge. Having a last look at the quays and Media City.

Salford Quays – built by Manchester ship canal company, Salford docks was the larger of two that made up Manchester docks, the other being Pamona. Opened in 1894 by Queen Victoria and spanned 120 acres. At their height the Manchester docks was the third busiest port in Britain. Trade routes where from North America, grain, meat, timber imported and finished cotton goods and machinery exported. The connection is remembered because the quays were named after the great lakes.

Ordsall Hall – large manor house dating back more than 750 years, although the oldest parts of the hall are from the 15th century

Manchester ship canal – 36-mile-long waterway linking Manchester to the Irish Sea, starting at the Mersey Estuary. When the ship canal opened in 1894 it was the largest river navigation in the world and enabled the new port of Manchester being the third busiest port in Britain even being about 40 miles inland.
