Walk Description:
Join us for 2025 exploring the coast of the magnificent Morecambe Bay in 14 walks throughout the year.
Until 250 years ago Morecambe Bay wasn't mentioned on the maps, instead being referred to as Lancaster or Leven sands. 2nd largest bay in the Uk, largest continous area of intertidal mud and sandflaps in the uk. Spring tidal range of 9m. Special protection area from Rossal point to past Barrow
This first walk which is about 8km leads us to the start of the bay coastline, hopefully with views of where we are aiming to get to Barrow in Furness, also the coastline we are leaving behind. Blackpool and further down to the hills of Wales Park at Fleetwood, tram down to Rossall school and then seawall all the way round past Rossall point and into Fleetwood.
Once in Fleetwood we will take the time to look at ‘the mount’, the lighthouses and Peter Hesketh Fleetwood.
Rossall Point tower open to the public – information about the Wyres coastline and an opportunity to get a fabulous view
The Mount – is a small hill which was once a sand dune and a rabbit warren. In the 1830’s the Rossall estate owned by peter Hesketh, was originally known as Tup Hill or Starr Hill. The architect Decimus Burton was to use the sand dune to lay the town out like spokes on a wheel and the mount was going to be the hub of the wheel. A pavilion building been there since 1800’s the present one for 100 years. Lighthouses – the upper and lower lighthouses or Beach and Pharos both designed by the architect Burton for Peter Hesketh. Both opened in 1840.
The Wyre light out in the bay built 1839-40 by Alexander Mitchell. Where the Wyre meets the Irish Sea on a sandbank the North Wharf. Unique because it was the first pile lighthouse in Britain. Its sits on seven screw piles driven into the seabed.
Hesketh Statue - Peter descendent of Edmund Fleetwood was the first named person to reside at Rossall Hall. Was the person who put the town of Fleetwood on the map. After being knighted he changed his name to Hesketh – Fleetwood. Poulton le fylde was the busy seaport for sailings to the Americas. Peter believed Fleetwood had the makings of a seaport and popular resort. It had a river mouth, natural sheltered harbour, all that was missing was a railway. Architect burton was hired to work on the railway and the first buildings commenced in 1836.
Euston hotel and gardens built in 1841 one of the original buildings when the town was built. Was built to serve overnight guests making the railway journey from Euston station in London. Was close to the departure points for steamers to Scotland. At that time no direct rail route from London to Scotland. Arrive in Fleetwood then sea ferry to Ardrossen then rail to Glasgow. The construction of the railway over Shap Fell in 1847 ended this sea/rail link.
Museum is the oldest surviving building dates to 1838, it was the custom house
