Walk Description:

David’s Delight Walk

Meet at the FREE car park adjacent to the Puffing Billy Café, Great Torrington. Post code EX388JD We’ll kick start our senses (and our body) with a warm up in the shelter of the road bridge before entering Torrington Common Via the main road.

We will follow the centenary path up to the Old Bowling Green before following the main track down hill, alongside the cemetery wall, until we each the stream. Here we cross the old stone bridge and continue to follow the path upwards, on reaching the junction we follow the path to our left which leads to the babbling common lake stream.

Along the way we have the opportunity to observe at first hand nature at its best while taking in the sights and sounds of the birds/squirrels and other wildlife going about their business.

We will follow the pathway along the almost hidden stream and skirt around the mini lakes until we reach the junction with the centenary bridge. Here we cross Reeds field with its natural pond full of water lilies and frogbit plants until we reach the beginning of the Rolle canal walk.

We have choices, follow the canal towpath or the Tarka rail to the weir in the hope of catching a glimpse of the local heron fishing in the waters before returning along the Tarka trail to the Puffing Billy where we will complete our cooldown and maybe enjoy some light refreshments.
