Walk Description:

We will be dropping some cars off at Greenfield Station before driving over to Broadbottom station so we can just pop back to Broadbottom at the end of the day. This is a long and arduous route so please contact Caroline if you're not sure if it's for you.

Stage 8 is an adventurous route that ventures high into the Dark Peak. With its spectacular scenery, it has a feel of the Scottish Highlands in places.

Highlights include:

Two lovely old lanes, with panoramic views across the Etherow and Longdendale valleys An ancient-feeling track that climbs into the Peak District National Park via an old stone bridge A brief trackless section through the appropriately named ‘Wilderness’ – the highest point of the entire GM Ringway trail Breathtaking views over Saddleworth’s Chew Valley A leisurely finish via Chew Piece Plantation, the only remaining area of long-standing deciduous woodland near Dove Stones Reservoir.

Because of the considerable ascent involved and the remote moorland landscapes visited, this route requires good visibility. It is best suited to experienced walkers with map-reading and navigation skills.

Please arrive 10 minutes before starting time and text if you can't make it at the last minute.
