Walk Description:
Step into the weekend with our two hour special walk.
Begin your journey in Ticknall, venturing into the serene grounds of Calke Abbey. This peaceful walk guides you through a diverse landscape, including grasslands, arable farmland, and one of Europe’s rarest habitats—wood pasture.
Along the route, you’ll encounter the Ticknall Limeyards, a fascinating historical feature dating back to the 15th century. These limeyards, once used for burning limestone, now a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), have been carefully managed to encourage the flourishing of calcareous grassland flora.
The mansion that dominates the estate today was constructed by Sir John Harpur between 1701 and 1704. Renamed Calke Abbey in 1808, the structure incorporates elements of the original Elizabethan house and is built on the site of a 12th-century Augustinian priory.
Please note that parking in Ticknall Village Hall can be very popular with other groups, so we advise you to arrive early.
