Walk Description:
Leaving Verwood on an unmade road we will explore the area on the outskirts of Verwood.
Part of the walk is on Dewlands Common which is an important site for native flora and fauna. In the
past commoners used to graze horses here.
Continuing along an unmade lane the trail goes up to a high point with views. There are wet areas at
the top of the hill but we can skirt round them.
Over a stile, into a field, through woodland then along a lane and more fields, it is possible to see
Horton Tower in the distance. This now hides mobile phone masts but was originally built by Sir
Humprey Sturt in the 1700's either as a folly or an observatory. We eventually cross Remedy Oak Golf
course on a road, followed by a bridle way to leave the course.
We resume forest trails crossing under the railway bridge, one of the last remaining
structures on the old Salisbury and District Junction Railway which closed in 1964. From here a short
walk to Margards Lane.
The walk is approx 6.5 miles long, it is an easy walk with one incline. Taking approx 2.5 hours.
Be prepared for puddles and several wet muddy areas. 6 stiles, mostly low ones.
Nearest toilets are at Morrison's near the roundabout where you turn off onto Springfield Road to
access the right part of Margard's lane. (This roundabout has Harlee's fish and chip shop on it)
Roadside parking opposite Haywards Farm Close just past Verwood C of E 1st school. Margards Lane
becomes unmade at the point where we leave the cars.
Options for coffee afterwards at Aroma in Verwood a five minute drive away.
Location Notes:
Go past the school campus (Verwood first School and Emmanuel Middle School. Also a sign for The Hive. Park on unmade road just past Haywards Farm Close. Nearest toilets at Ferrett Green or Morrisons.
