Walk Description:

An easy flat walk taking in a loop of beautiful Burton common.

This walk is just under five miles and starts in Stewarts Garden centre.

We walk through Sainsbury's carpark and briefly walk beside the bypass which is very noisy. The path then leaves for peaceful countryside where birdsong can be heard and buzzards seen.

We follow the single file path around the edge of fields and over a stream. The area immediately after this is muddy and joins a bridleway which heads into pretty woodland. At the moment the bluebells are still in bloom.

This takes us to Burton common. An SSSI of 79 acres. It is mature dry heathland with areas of deciduous woodland along the banks of a stream. We explore this area on wide paths which are mainly gravel and go over the stream on a bridge.

Exiting the woodland we make our return along Ambury lane which is a wider path that completes this circular walk.

There are no stiles, thee small bridges with handrails. Long grass and some paths are narrow. Other paths are on gravel.

There are sometimes a few cattle grazing the common. The walk is quite exposed so on a hot day plenty of water needed. Supportive boots required.

Please park on the gravel at the rear of Stewarts car park overlooking the field. Option for refreshments afterwards.

Location Notes:

Please park in Stewarts garden centre. No restriction on time .Park in the rear car park on the gravel.
