Walk Description:
Join us for 2025 exploring the coast of the magnificent Morecambe Bay in 15 walks throughout the year.
Until 250 years ago Morecambe Bay wasn't mentioned on the maps, instead being referred to as Lancaster or Leven sands. 2nd largest bay in the Uk, largest continous area of intertidal mud and sandflaps in the uk. Spring tidal range of 9m. Special protection area from Rossal point to past Barrow
This third walk is 10.3 km After a short journey on the bus to Cockerham, we walk through fields until we arrive at Cockerham marshes.
A lovely quiet but impressive area. Lots of seabirds especially when the tide is in. We can sit and have lunch here.
From here we will walk along the coast past many caravan parks making use pf the wonderful area. Old farmhouses the ruins of Cockersands Abbey, Plover Scar Lighthouse and into Glasson Dock.
Chance for a cuppa and ice cream here before last bit along the track bed of the Glasson Dock to Lancaster railway back into Conder Green.
The Glasson/Lancaster railway was built in 1883 to connect the dock to the rest of the network at Lancaster. Glasson Dock was opened in 1787 as part of the port of Lancaster, was moving 10,000 tonnes a day to Isle of Man amongst other places. The railway was low lying and prone to flooding, the dock slowly declined, and the good services stopped in 1964. The Glasson branch was opened in 1826 as a route to the sea.
Plover Scar Lighthouse built in 1847 also known as the Abbey Lighthouse is still active and recently was renovated after a vessel navigating into the docks ran into it.
Chapter House is the remains of the 13th century Cockerham Abbey. The Abbey is a ruined 12th century Premonstratensian monastery, overlooking the estuary of the river lune. The abbey was founded in 1180 as a simple hermitage but was raised 10 years later to status of a fully-fledged Abbey in 1190 AD. Lighthouse keepers house - was originally integrated into the high lighthouse called Cockersands lighthouse which was next to the Abbey. By the 1950’s both lighthouses where automated so this was dismantled but the house remains.
