Walk Description:
Join us for 2025 exploring the coast of the magnificent Morecambe Bay in 15 walks throughout the year.
Until 250 years ago Morecambe Bay wasn't mentioned on the maps, instead being referred to as Lancaster or Leven sands. 2nd largest bay in the Uk, largest continous area of intertidal mud and sandflaps in the uk. Spring tidal range of 9m. Special protection area from Rossal point to past Barrow
This fourth walk is 9km’s long. We will walk along the River Lune from Conder Green into Lancaster, using the old railway trackbed of the Glasson Dock to Lancaster railway.
A lovely path with views of the estuary and spring flowers and blossom on the sides as we pass. As we get into Lancaster we walk along the old quay where many of the old buildings can still be seen, so we can pick up some history associated with them.
The Glasson/Lancaster railway was built in 1883 to connect the dock to the rest of the network at Lancaster. Glasson Dock was opened in 1787 as part of the port of Lancaster, was moving 10,000 tonnes a day to Isle of Man amongst other places. The railway was low lying and prone to flooding, the dock slowly declined and the good services stopped in 1964.
The Glasson branch was opened in 1826 as a route to the sea.
St Georges Quay Lancaster was built in 1750, when lancaster was a very busy port. Imported sugar, cotton, rum, mahogony and exported furniture and general merchandise to the colonies in North America and West Indies.
It is essential to register and book in advance online.
