Walk Description:

Join us for 2025 exploring the coast of the magnificent Morecambe Bay in 15 walks throughout the year.

Until 250 years ago Morecambe Bay wasn't mentioned on the maps, instead being referred to as Lancaster or Leven sands. 2nd largest bay in the Uk, largest continous area of intertidal mud and sandflaps in the uk. Spring tidal range of 9m. Special protection area from Rossal point to past Barrow

This fifth walk is 10 kms long. First walk about 0.3 miles to catch the bus down to Overton, where we will then walk over the tidal road to Sunderland Point.

Amazing views of the Lune, Glasson Dock and Sunderland Point as we walk across. From here we will walk across the point to the bay and enjoy the views as we head in the Direction of Heysham.

Passing through nature reserves which have been created in the areas left by industrial use. Finishing at the lovely Half Moon Bay once again enjoying lovely views as we go.

Refreshments' and toilets on the way.

Tidal road – tidal causeway, mile and quarter in length. Lades marsh, a salt marsh with mixed vegetation thriving on the mineral rich sediments brought in by the Lune. It is a dynamic environment which has seen growth and spread over the last century but is now in gradual retreat.

Sunderland Point – developed as an outport for Lancaster at the beginning of the 18th century, by Robert Lawson a Quaker. Reportedly stonework from the ruined Cockersand Abbey was utilised for the construction of the quay and buildings. Lawson went bankrupt in 1728 which began the steady decline until it was surpassed by Glasson Dock in 1787.

The ships could be unloaded or wait for the tide before moving up into Lancaster.

Nature reserves – developed on a former industrial site - refinery produced aviation fuel in WWII and was then used as a chemical facility until the 1970’s. Site became disused, and wildlife took over.

Half Moon Bay – stretches from the wall of Heysham Harbour up to the coast to the Heritage centre at Lower Heysham. Area has been inhabited since the stone age.
