Walk Description:
Join us for 2025 exploring the coast of the magnificent Morecambe Bay in 15 walks throughout the year.
Until 250 years ago Morecambe Bay wasn't mentioned on the maps, instead being referred to as Lancaster or Leven sands. 2nd largest bay in the Uk, largest continous area of intertidal mud and sandflaps in the uk. Spring tidal range of 9m. Special protection area from Rossal point to past Barrow
The sixth walk is 10km and starts from half-moon bay, where we finished the previous walk. The views across the bay are great and we now have the Heysham Power Station behind us. Something that has been in the views for quite a few walks.
We soon arrive at the ruins of St Patricks chapel, plenty of history here and then the slightly newer church of St Peters.
As we walk through the village, we can pay a quick visit to the heritage centre From here we walk along the promenade round to Morecambe and then onto Hest Bank.
We will catch the bus back to the car. St Peters chapel – was consecrated in 967 CE but the oldest parts 0f the chirch date back to 8th century. There is evidence that an earlier, wooden church stod nearer the sea. A major reconstruction probably took place in the mid 10-century.
Visitor centre - is in what was originally a long house, it is an unusual example of surviving 17th century village architecture.
Midland Hotel. - was built in 1933 by the London, Midland and Scottish railway. Was built to replace two other railway hotels. Built in the art deco style, is grade 2
