Walk Description:
Join us for 2025 exploring the coast of the magnificent Morecambe Bay in 15 walks throughout the year.
Until 250 years ago Morecambe Bay wasn't mentioned on the maps, instead being referred to as Lancaster or Leven sands. 2nd largest bay in the Uk, largest continous area of intertidal mud and sandflaps in the uk. Spring tidal range of 9m. Special protection area from Rossal point to past Barrow
This the 8th walk where we start to feel as though we are really on our way round the bay, around 10.5 km, from Carnforth to Silverdale.
Warton Crag is an impressive obstacle which we will have to navigate round. But first after Carnforth will look at the old rectory in Warton village, and then the quarry.
After walking across the embankment, we will take a small detour to look at Jenny Browns Point, before walking to Silverdale Railway station.
There are some ups and downs involved getting round the crag but on a road so easy surface.
Millhead - was originally called Dudley but was changed when workers were brought in 1864 to the steel works.
Old rectory - example of a large medieval dwelling, not only a home for the rector of the local church, which was founded in the 12th century but was also a manor where courts where held, it became one of the wealthiest rectories in the diocese of York.
Warton Crag – evidence had been found around Warton Crag to suggest human activity as long as ago as the Bronze Age, the summit long been thought of as a hill fort. Warton is derived from an old English word ‘weard’ watch or look out, and crag from Celtic crug hill or mound.
Jenny Browns point - a headland with the remains of a furnace used to purify locally mined metal ores. Furnace was built in the 1780’s. Used to process copper and iron ores from nearby Warton Crag and Heald Brow.
