Walk Description:

A walk from The Angel pub. Crossing the road we will head along bridleways until we reach Hampreston

Woods. This is under the care of the Erica Trust and has only been open to the public for a few years.

From the woods we will walk past the lake then around Ferndown common before returning to the pub.

The common is home to Dartford warblers. Work is on going to prevent invasive scrub so that open

heathland is maintained.

The Common was used for sand aggregates extraction until the late 1950's. There are also two Bronze

Age tumuli.

Owned by the Wimborne Estate and leased to the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust (ARC).

This area is an SSSI. Slow worms are ofter seen.

A zoo was located nearby in 1947 to 1954 near where M and S is now. Among the animals were bears,

silver foxes, monkeys, a gorilla and lions. Ajax and Leonora. Ajaz used to roar through the night which

made the locals fearful he might escape.

Option for coffee at the pub afterwards.

Feel free to park in the pub if joining us for coffee after, otherwise just outside on the street is plenty of

parking by the railings.

The walk is around 3 to 3.5 miles.

Location Notes:

Please park in the pub carpark if going in for coffee at the end of the walk . Otherwise plenty of on road parking by the railings outside pub. Paws on poles needed for road section.
