Walk Description:
This is a fast paced walk.It is suitable for those with a good level of fitness.
We will walk along the Trailway to Delph Woods. From the woods, we go up an incline ( sandy, stoney path, some gorse, nettles present, occasional cows) to Dunyeats Heath and then circle back down to the woods, to continue the wooded walk. Alternatively we may stay in the woods.
Insect repellent is recommended
Delph Woods is a 24 acre site.We will park in a residential area. From here, we cross the bridge by Broadstone Golf Club, and walk up the trail way which is wide and flat.
In Delph Woods, we walk along the unsurfaced woodland paths, alongside Blackwater Stream. We may pass the cricket pitch, and see the large pond. It can be muddy areas after wet weather.
The word 'Delph' is derived from an Old English word for mining and quarrying and it was probably one of the places from which local people extracted gravel for building purposes. The pond, now a drinking place for woodland animals including foxes and Roe deer, is probably a remnant of a gravel pit.
There is a magnificent 200 year old common Oak standing 80 feet high with a circumference of just over 13 feet. However other estimates from the girth circumference are 281 years. Planting year: 1729
