Walk Description:

Saturday Explorer Day walk

Discover the quieter side of the White Peak on this rewarding and varied circular route, perfect for keen members looking to explore some of the Peak District’s hidden gems.

Starting from the picturesque Ilam National Trust car park, the route climbs steadily out of the valley, offering sweeping views as you head towards the tranquil village of Calton. The climb is worth every step, revealing the rolling limestone landscape that makes this area so special.

The walk passes the Cart Low Tumulus, a fascinating prehistoric burial mound, before descending into the peaceful, lesser-trodden Soles Hollow – a real highlight for those seeking solitude and natural beauty. Rejoining the Manifold Way, a disused railway line turned scenic walking and cycling route, the path traces the eastern side of the Manifold Valley, with its wooded slopes and dramatic limestone outcrops, before looping towards Castern and gently winding back to Ilam.

This is a moderately strenuous but deeply rewarding walk, rich in history, geology, and panoramic views – a true White Peak adventure.

Good to know: Bring your National Trust membership card for free parking at Ilam. There are facilities and refreshments available at Ilam Hall. Suitable for experienced walkers with good fitness due to ascents/descents and uneven terrain.
