Walk Description:
This walk is the recce for the Walx festival in September.
A 4.5 mile walk to the iconic Golden Cap.
Golden Cap is the highest point on the Jurassic coast at 191 metres and is a distinctive yellow sandstone
From Sea Hill a 10 min road walk takes us to a series of bridleways which are moderately steep. (Muddy after rain)
We will reach Langdon Woods NT carpark having had views over Chideock as we climb.
Crossing the carpark we circle through beautiful woods of Scots pine and Larch.
There are views to Morcombelake and Lyme Regis. The paths here are wide and flat.
As we exit the woods the path goes steeply downhill briefly before a short steep climb up steps to the top. The steps are very deep.
The views are stunning back to Seatown and extend across to Portland.
The top of Golden Cap is large and flat. There will be time to take photos, have a drink and snacks.
The views from the other side are as far as Devon on a clear day.
The descent is one mile steeply downhill on grassy paths. Any cows are behind an electric fence.
Please bring layers, sunscreen and plenty of water. Supportive boots needed.
There is a large carpark which has an attendant and the cost is £8 with a £2 voucher for the Anchor
pub which serves good meals. The voucher can also be used at the Seatown Slice a beachside pizza
kiosk.
Toilets are by the sea just down from the carpark.
Allow time from the A35 as the roads are very narrow down to the village which is beside the sea.
The shingle beach is popular with fishermen, walkers and fossil hunters.
Location Notes:
Park in main carpark. £6 per day includes £2 voucher off food at the Anchor pub. Toilets and pub nearby. (Chris Pole)
