Walk Description:

Join us for a group AW for a 10 km walk from Settle in the Yorkshire Dales.

Along the River Ribble to Stainforth, stopping at Stainforth falls known for salmon jumping in the season, for lunch before walking through Stainforth.

Stainforth is a lovely little village, with many paths from it to do further exploring.  From here we will start our return, stopping at the spectacular example of a Hoffman Kiln. We can explore into the kiln and wonder at the sheer size of it.

Next stop is  Langcliffe, another lovely little village, before gaining a bit of height for fabulous views before returning down into Settle.

Settle – is thought to have 7th century origins. In 1250 a market charter was granted, a market square was granted. During the English civil War, John Lambert of carlton in malhamdale was a general in Cromwells Army and his troops camped at Settle in 1651 while on the road to an encounter in Lancaster,

Stainforth force – in Autumn salmon can often be seen leaping on their final journey to the spawning grounds. Just above the force is a former monastic road crosses the Ribble on a pack horse bridge that was built in 1675

Stainforth – name derives from stony ford, which linked two settlements half a mile apart on opposite banks of the river. On the eastern side was formerly owned by Sawley Abbey whose monks developed the estate which prospered, while little Stainforth under private ownership declined. In 1670’s the ford was replaced by a packhorse bridge

Hoffman Kiln – craven lime works, the kiln was built in 1873 using a patented system created by a German inventor to burn lime. There where 22 individual burning chambers working in a continuous circuit taking around 6 weeks to complete the cycle.

Langcliffe – the early settlement was nearer to the Winskill lane at the bottom of the scar then it is now. In about 1200 the monks of Furness Abbey built a corn mill on the Langcliffe side of the Ribble.
