Walk Description:

Join us for 2025 exploring the coast of the magnificent Morecambe Bay in 15 walks throughout the year.

Until 250 years ago Morecambe Bay wasn't mentioned on the maps, instead being referred to as Lancaster or Leven sands. 2nd largest bay in the Uk, largest continous area of intertidal mud and sandflaps in the uk. Spring tidal range of 9m. Special protection area from Rossal point to past Barrow

Join us for this 9km walk from the car park on the coast, for the first part of the walk.

Eventually heading into Beach Wood where will find the Conishead Priory. From here will walk past the slag heaps remnants of the industrial revolution and find ourselves at canal foot the end of the Ulverston canal.

Walk the length of the canal back towards Ulverston.

Bardsea – was once a small farming and fishing village into the 19th century. The area was associated with the quaker movement.

Conishead Priory – is a large gothic revival building on the Furness Peninsula, name translates to ‘Kings Hill Priory. A house of Augustinian canons was founded at Conishead in the twelth century and existed there till the dissolution of the monasteries.

Leven Viaduct -- was originally constructed in 1848 to 1857 and reconstructed in wrought iron in 1880. 49 span, 480m, 7.9m above water level.

Bay horse hotel, canal foot – a 17th century coaching house on the shores of the Levens Estate

Ulverston canal – is a 1.25-mile ship canal, was built so that maritime trading vessels could use the towns port. Was built in the 18th century. Wharves were built in the town to handle the cargo and goods being loaded and unloaded from seagoing vessels.

Rolling bridge, canal. - grade 2 structure, carried the Bardsea branch, a cut back line served the North Lonsdale Iron and Steel works. Canal traffic ceased in the 1940, s, the bridge was fixed but rail traffic was still using the bridge to Glaxo Kline delivering until 1994 a weekly oil train and caustic soda liquor to the antibiotic works.
