Walk Description:

Another lovely walk along the Lancaster canal. From Tewitfield to Crooklands, a walk of 12km where we will see how often the canal has been split by the roads and motorway.

Starting off by walking past the locks at Tewitfield which are now not used but are still there. We will have to make a couple of detours away from the canal as it is but still following the footpath. Farleton knot is quite impressive as we walk past, and the scenery is lovely.

Even though the canal is not completely full of water and all the way along and is overgrown in places is still a lovely place to be.

we will have to leave cars at each end for this week as the end of the walk is not on a bus route which will get us back to the start.

Tewitfield – 8 locks lift the canal 75 feet over three quqrters of a mile. These are the only locks on the whole of the canal. Where opened when the canal was extended to Kendal in 1819, 22 years after the Preston to Tewitfield section was opened. The locks where officially closed in 1968 when the M6 was constructed, but they had in fact already been disused for several years.

Coke ovens – 5 beehive shaped ovens. Built into mounds of earth. They were constructed around 1819.

Coal yard – that you can see today was probably a timber yard associated with Gatebeck Gunpowder works. Timber was unloaded from barges and stored here before being taken on to the works.

Farleton knot – bulky eminence of limestone, apparently if you were to walk it you would see limestone pavement and fantastic views all round.

It is essential to register and book in advance online.

It is advisable to wear a bum bag with a water bottle or hydration pack. Do bring a high energy snack to have on the hoof or as soon as we finish. Wear comfortable clothing that suitable for the weather. Do wear sturdy grippy shoes.
