Walk Description:
Join us for the final bit of the canal as it arrives in Kendal.
We will once again on this 10km walk start from Levens Hall but walk along the other side of the river Kent.
Walk through a lovely avenue of trees before joining the Lancaster canal trail. This is interesting as it goes through fields but under the bridges that are still there.
Across the Sedgewick aqueduct and at times along the tow path of the canal which shape is clearly there. The last approach to Kendal is on a cycle path arriving at canal Head.
We will walk again across the River Kent to the bus station for our transport back to Levens Hall
Sedgewick house – in 1794 a Kendal businessman john Wakefield bought land and buildings to develop his gunpowder works and created a family home at the old Sedgewick house which was nearer the river than the present one. A descendent of john built the new house in 1869 and demolished the old one. Built in a gothic style and now a listed building.
Sedgewick aqueduct – designed by William Crossley Jnr was built between 1817 and 1818, remained in use until 1955.it is unusual in that it is skewed – built at an angle to avoid a bend in the road
Canal Head - the end of the canal at Kendal, filled in by 1947. Some of the buildings remain.
