Walk Description:
A lovely walk through wooded footpaths, an ancient ox drove and Whiteshute ridge with lofty views of Winchester's main landmarks.
From the railway track, we ascend onto Whiteshute Ridge and as we look back, we are rewarded with views of the beautiful cathedral and other important Winchester landmarks. We catch a wide tree lined track that changes into a bridleway (muddy in parts during the winter) descending towards Compton. We then join a magical ancient ox drove lined with large yew trees which transport us to another time where we can imagine people leading their cattle to market. The path ascends and takes us back onto the ridge with views of fields and St Catherine's Hill. We head towards Oliver's Battery on a wide path on which we can stride out and head back towards whiteshute ridge looking down onto Winchester.
Location Notes:
Meet near the Railway Bridge towards the end of Mead Road. Park anywhere on the road. SO23 9RF
