Walk Description:

This walk explores a dramatic corner of the White Peak where limestone landscapes and industrial history are closely intertwined. Crags, caves and grottos line the route, opening up expansive views across the Derwent Valley towards Riber Castle, perched high above the surrounding hills. Built by renowned industrialist John Smedley, whose world-famous cotton mill still operates today, Riber Castle has lived many lives — from private home to boys’ school, years of dereliction, a zoo, and more recently its transformation into apartments. Its story reflects the wider industrial heritage that defines this area.

The route also passes through Cromford, where the story of the Industrial Revolution comes vividly to life through mills, workers’ housing and historic infrastructure set within a striking natural landscape. One of the highlights of this walk is the Giddy Edge traverse. This is an exposed path with steep drops and is not suitable for those uncomfortable with heights. Participation on this section is entirely optional, and an alternative route is available, allowing everyone to enjoy the walk at a level that feels comfortable and safe for them.

There are several steep sections throughout the walk, but these are richly rewarded with breathtaking scenery, fascinating points of interest and a strong sense of place. A challenging and memorable route for those who enjoy dramatic terrain and history woven into the landscape.
