Walk Description:
A flat 3.5 mile walk around Stanpit Marsh which is an SSSI nature reserve and 65 hectares in size.
Situated beside Christchurch harbour where the Avon and Stour flow together.
Internationally recognised as a bird watching area.
Home to more than 300 species of birds and plants. Also home to semi -wild New Forest ponies.
We start with a five minute walk along pavements to reach the start of the marsh. The first part of the walk goes round the Sang with views of the river and the Priory. It is possible in dry weather to walk a short way along the river bank to explore. There is a reed bed walkway which sometimes becomes passable.
After this we enter the marsh and walk in a circular route round the whole area. There are waterside views of the surrounding areas of Hengistbury Head and the beach huts. In the distance is the Isle of Wight.
On our return we will take a diversion along Fisherman's bank to look back at the area we have just walked before returning to the cars.
Ledbury road has plenty of roadside parking and public toilets. It is beside Mudeford recreation ground and opposite a fish and chip shop.
