Walk Description:
Join us for a lovely day out to explore the beautiful Lyme Deer Park, opportunity to look at the hall, gardens and park.
Again, part of the GM ringway long distance walk but deserves a day all to itself. You can mix and match the day to whatever you would like to do but I will offer a 3 mile walk to cover an area of the park which will include areas such as ‘the cage’ which gives you view over Manchester, up to the ‘Lantern’ and some lovely views over the hall.
Is looked after by the National Trust. If not a member various ticketing options available, gardens and park or hall, gardens and park. If you travel by public transport free to enter. A 0.8 mile walk from the station but then most days a volunteer shuttle bus from the entrance up the drive to the hall. The reason why i am offering it on a saturday is that there is more choice of trains.
Lyme Park – the estate came into the Leghs of Lyme by marriage in 1388, where it remained until 1946, when it was given to the national trust. The house dates from the latter part of the 16th century. Formal gardens were created and developed in the late 19th and 20th centuries
Cage – was originally a hunting lodge and was later used as a park keepers' cottage and as a lock up for prisoners
Lantern – a belverdere ( a structure designed for a beautiful view) The top storey and spire date from about 1580 and originally formed a bellcote on the north gatehouse.
