Walk Description:
Rockford common is an area of open heathland and woodland. The area is rich in wildlife and is an SSSI.
It is usual to see New Forest ponies and sometimes donkeys.
From the carpark a short walk uphill takes us up to the lowland heath. We continue through a wooded area and then go down to the lakes. The paths are mainly grassy and gravel and can be muddy after rain. There are also some exposed tree roots.
Hockey's farmshop and cafe is a three minute drive for optional refreshments after our walk with toilets available for customers.
In the Autumn the pannage starts and the Forest has pigs foraging for acorns.
The walk is about 5 miles.
Ground nesting bird restrictions are in place and dogs need to be on leads.
Parking is in the National Trust car park and is free.
Location Notes:
Plenty of free parking. No facilities but this car park is just along the road from the Alice Lilse pub. It is near the Blashford Lakes and you can get to it off the A338 or from the A31 Poulner exit. Nearest cafe/deli/butchers/toilets is at Hockey's farm shop 5 mins away.
