Instructors delivering classes in the UK

Bruce Perkins

I’ve spent four decades in the armed forces while playing hockey at all levels from club through county to international masters’, so when I retired to North Devon, Nordic walking was the answer to my need for a new exercise fix.
It’s a great reason to get up and out in any weather and at any time of day to meet new people and North Devon is an ideal spot with its vast range of sand, sea and grasslands to explore.

Denis & Sue Collen

Harrow Striders was started by Sue & Den Collen in April 2017.  They have lived in Harrow for over 25 years but only realised the number of fabulous country parks on their doorstep since taking up Nordic walking 5 years ago. They now fully appreciate the great potential for improving health, fitness and well-being by exercising outdoors and want to share this with our local communities.and we wanted to share the health and wellness benefits we experienced with others in our local communities in the beautiful green spaces and green flagged parks around Harrow.

Welcome to I’d Rather Be Outdoors

We offer Nordic Walks in and around Stockport, Marple, High Peak and in Lyme Park.

Our Regular Walks take place on a variety of circular routes around the area, using a mixture of streets, canals, parks, woodland, riverside paths, and bridlepaths. It’s sometimes surprising how quickly you can go from urban to semi rural, I love getting to show off walks or a surprising viewpoint off the beaten track that otherwise may have stayed hidden.

Our walks are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Sometimes we go further afield for our Longer Walks, Peak District, Macclesfield Forest etc

I’d love to be able to help you get Outdoors too.

I started Nordic walking  12 years ago when I moved into Thorpe. I have always been active but wanted to do an outdoors activity with the Peak District on our doorstep.
Now I am going out for a Nordic walk in every kind of weather and certatainly agree with the slogan:
“Nordic Walking turns a walk into a workout walk”

Nordic Walking is an exercise practice that is a safe and sociable way to improve your health, your fitness and your well-being. Nordic Walking is a total body version of walking, using the special Nordic Walking poles to exercise and strengthen your upper body and legs, as well as your improving your posture.

Athletes use it as an effective training regime, and for the rest of us it is an excellent all-round energising exercise – great for toning your muscles and helping you to lose weight.

If you are looking to lose weight, get fitter, cross-train, meet new friends, enjoy the outdoors or simply enjoy a sociable outdoor activity, Nordic walking fits the bill.

Once you have learnt the simple basic technique you will be able to join many of our walks and fitness sessions, all structured to help you with your fitness ambitions.

Mercian Nordic Walking

Ian is passionate that every human being is given the opportunity to achieve their potential.  Fitness goals can be achieved in a fun way and nordic walking is a full body sociable exercise for all.

Your journey with us will start with a “Learn To/Power of the Poles” induction.  This is designed so that you will get the most from your exercise walks with us but also so we know you are safe using the poles.

“Adventure Walks” are fitness walks that are very sociable in nature.  They are not a ramble but the onus is on “sociability with fitness” and can range from 2-14 miles.

“Workout Walks” are fitness walks where the onus is on fitness, a bit like attending a gymclass where you will work and not chat too much.  They are still very sociable and a lot of fun but we are not ramblers as you will see.

“Balance, Strength & Agility Classes” are a session in the park where we work at these vital elements of your fitness.  It is a fun session with likeminded people who want to be as independent as possible for as long as possible and who understand that walking alone is not enough.

“Wellbeing Walks” are for clients who are new to exercise who need to take things gently.  They are a 2 mile walk with some gentle exercises included”.

“20 Minute Wellbing Online” are a short class where we work  on mobility and balance.

We are a fitness company and we firmly believe that consistency is the key.  One exercise session a week is unlikely to be enough and so we offer several activities that you can join in with for maximum benefit.

We are not Ramblers but Nordic Walkers who can offer you the chance to “Turn a Walk into a Workout”.

Please read about out Team to see the fantastic walk leaders we have who will guide and support you.
