A 2k to 3k gentle WALX that incorporates balance work, flexibility and strength exercises and maybe a bit of yoga or relaxation too. On Monday these walks take place around Stanmore and Harrow Weald on mainly flat terrain but we do go on trails through the woods so that we can enjoy the changes in nature throughout the year. This is a very friendly group and we are always ready to welcome new walkers who want to get back into exercise in a safe and gradual way.
Starting in April 2025 there is also the option to sign up for the 6 week Total Body Walking Programme in the beautiful Canons Park in Stanmore which is being supported by TfL and Friends of Canons Park. This programme runs on Tuesdays and Sundays at 11am.

Power of Poles Intro Course is a 90-minute introduction to get you started with strapless total body walking poles. It will turn your walk into a workout. You will learn the basic technique of using the poles to improve posture, strengthen your core, work all the major muscle groups, burn more calories than regular walking and get an enhanced cardio workout, all while feeling propelled by the poles and lighter on your feet.After you have completed this introductory session, you will receive the Freedom Passport and you can join any NWUK group walks in the UK.Poles will be provided for you on the day.
This is an outdoor activity and you will need to bring appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather and terrain which can be uneven, stony and muddy.Outdoor trainers or flexible-soled walking shoes are preferable.If wet weather is expected, we advise water resistant/waterproof shoes or a change of socks/shoes. Waterproof jacket and trousers are advisable.In cold weather we recommend several layers that can be removed if required. In extreme cold weather hats and gloves (preferably walking or sports gloves) are desirable.In warm weather we recommend, sun hat, sun cream, insect repellent , long trousers/sleeves to guard against nettles/thorns/insects/ticks. Please bring a water bottle and snacks and a small back pack is useful for carrying them in. Poles are provided for this session. Please aim to arrive 5-10min before the start time so we can begin the session promptly.

This is an Intermediate/Gear 2 walk (the distance is greater than a Gear 1/Intermediate walk) of approximately 4 miles with a couple of different options according to the ground conditions. Maybe one or two short steep ramps and some longer hills can be included depending on sign ups, but as a rule the walk includes gentle inclines and hard tracks through woods.
Intermediate - A faster pace than Gear 1 and an established technique is key, but if necessary a little more recovery time for those that need it.
Gear 2 - A faster pace gained through technique. There will be less recovery time.

Beginners Nordic Walking Courses. (Power of Poles Intro) The next date after this one is 28th June These are a great way to get started with Nordic walking, whether for health, fitness or simply exercising effectively outside.Walking with poles is less stressful on the joints, it makes you walk faster with very little extra effort, it works your upper body as well as the legs.The result being more effective calorie burning, stronger core and toning of the upper body.The initial session is 90 minute session, you'll learn the basics of Nordic walking, gaining the skills to get the most from your own walking as well as being able to join national Nordic Walking UK and WALX classes.Once the first session is completed, two regular walks or one longer walk are included with IRBO, and everything we did in the first session will come together. (Must be taken within four weeks of the course.)Locally, you'll be able to book into any of our I'd Rather Be Outdoors Nordic Walks and you can join walks & classes, every week all around the UK. Evening walk after a day at home or in the office. This session is an hours brisk walk to help to switch off at the end of the day. It is a brisk one hour walk, with few stops. It will be at a steady consistent pace so ideal for building your cardio fitness!!
It is a social walk so you will have the distraction of chatting whilst exercising.
During the winter months head torches are essential so YOU can be seen as the route tends to be off the Comyn. During the lighter evenings there is more opportunity to take this session over fields and farmland.
