Power of Poles intro course

Find out how to use fitness walking poles to achieve the results YOU want. This course will help you understand how to select the right kind of poles and use them for health, fitness, fun or challenges.

This course will ensure you get the correct movement and techniques from the start. We provide the poles for tuition sessions. These are strapless during the first part and we change to strapped nordic walking poles in the second half of the course.

After this course you will receive the Freedom Passport to book walks with all NWUK instructors.

A progression to an optional Part 2 of the course gives you the opportunity to explore how to get more out of using Nordic style strapped poles with drills and advanced technique tuition.

Don`t forget to wear suitable shoes and clothing for all weathers and bring a drink and snack.

Come, spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning exploring interesting circular walks, up hill and down dale, in the Chilterns and South Bucks areas. With a wide variety of venues and terrain to chose from you are sure to discover a few favourites. The walk will change each week, and where practical will finish somewhere with refreshments and facilities.

Enjoy sociable Nordic Walking with your fellow experienced  Freedom Passport holders in a variety of locations with a mixed ability group.

Walk Description:

The Saturday Strider is led this week by NWUK Walk Leader Sue Kelly and is an easy/moderate pace 2-3 mile, 1 hour walk. Get some great Nordic Walking exercise, fresh air and chat! They are great walks to attend to build your fitness especially if you`d like to progress onto the faster paced or longer walks. 

Meeting point - We meet outside the cafe at the Visitor Centre Car Park. (Sat Nav: M27 6NG). Plenty of free parking. Easily reached via exit 16 off the M60 or exit 2 off the M61, then along the A666 and turn down Clifton House Road (follow brown signs). Bus stop: Use the Clifton Cricket Club stop on Manchester Road (Bus numbers 8 and 22). Park is a short walk down Clifton House Road.

Why not come earlier for 10.30 & join in our cafe social between the end of the Early Bird Workout Walk and the start of the 11am session.... have a quick brew (option to bring your own mug to be more environmentally friendly & save 20p on your drink too) and have breakfast if you wish.

Toilet facilities are available at the cafe (along with the usual hot drinks and snacks).

Duration - 1 hour, walk grade 2.5.  Mark is away so this will be an informal walk led by Christine and/or Penny.  This walk is conducted at a gentle pace, with rest stops if required.  Regular catch-up and re-grouping to allow people to walk ahead if required.   This class combines Nordic walking with strength and balance exercises.  As well as improving your cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength the focus on posture, balance and flexibility will alleviate physical stresses on your body.  This is also an effective total body workout for those new or returning to exercise or seeking gentler exercise that accommodates their medical needs.  You`ll feel great after completing this class!  You can walk and talk but still enjoy the benefits of Nordic Walking.

People who came in 2024 can pay £80 up until this listing expires.

Early booking fee for everyone else is book before 1st June 2024 and you get it cheaper.  Thereafter it is full price.

THIS IS A THREE DAY TRIP TAKING IN THE BEAUTIFUL BEACH OF WOOLACOMBE IN DEVON.

YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE WALKING ELEMENT HERE ONLY AND YOU WILL NEED TO ORGANISE YOUR OWN ACCOMMODATION. I WILL BE ABLE TO OFFER SUGGESTIONS.

Itinerary could be subject to change.

FRIDAY 10th JANUARY 2025

1pm - Meet at The Red Barn and walk to The Putsborough Beach Shop where the owner Anthony is opening up especially for us.  (If you want something to eat we might need to let him know).

Choice of 4 miles, 6 miles or 9 miles.

4.30pm - Optional night walk on beach.

7pm - Meet at local pub for a social evening.

SATURDAY 11th JANUARY 2025

10am - Meet at The Red Barn and we will walk on the coastal path over Mortehoe.

Choice of 6 miles or 11 Miles.

7pm - Meet at a local restaurant.

SUNDAY 12th JANUARY 2025

10am - Meet at The Red Barn for a lovely walk including Smuggling tales. (Approx 6 miles)

5pm - Meet at a local pub for a meal.

WOOLACOMBE IS QUIET AT THIS TIME OF YEAR (THE ATTRACTION FOR ME) AND HAS LIMITED PUBS AND RESTAURANTS BUT ENOUGH FOR US.

IT HAS  A LOCAL SHOP IN CASE YOU  ARE IN SELF CATERING ACCOMMODATION.

EVERYONE LAST YEAR STAYED AT THE IMPERIAL B AND B AND WE CAN ALL RECOMMEND IT.

You can arrange B and B accommodation or Self Catering but my preference is us eall having breakfast together as it is fun and creates a fantastic community atmosphere.

Walk Description:

A great way to start the week is with an Active Mondays walk in and around Stanmore. Get ready for the weekend with a stimulating Saturday morning walk around Stanmore Country park. Or join us on a Sunday morning for a longer, faster paced walk in Ruislip Woods.These are intermediate walks, lasting one hour and will include some hill work. For those new to the area you`ll be surprised at the fantastic views over London that you get from Wood Farm Viewpoint, the hidden lakes in PearsWood and Bentley Priory and the seemigly endless trails through woods which change with the seasons.

Walkabout Wednesdays give the opportunity to travel a little further into neighbouring boroughs, or out along the Metropolitan line into the Chess Valley. Saturdays we`re always in the Stanmore Country Park, but we never tire of it as there are such a variety of trails to explore.
