Pace one
A 2k to 3k gentle WALX that incorporates balance work, flexibility and strength exercises and maybe a bit of yoga or relaxation too. On Monday these walks take place around Stanmore and Harrow Weald on mainly flat terrain but we do go on trails through the woods so that we can enjoy the changes in nature throughout the year. This is a very friendly group and we are always ready to welcome new walkers who want to get back into exercise in a safe and gradual way.
Starting in April 2025 there is also the option to sign up for the 6 week Total Body Walking Programme in the beautiful Canons Park in Stanmore which is being supported by TfL and Friends of Canons Park. This programme runs on Tuesdays and Sundays at 11am.

This walk is approximately 4.5/5 miles. There are two different options according to sign ups and the weather. Both options include a longish medium incline and possibly a couple of short steeper ramps. The walk is along country lanes, grass tracks, open countryside and wooded tracks.
Intermediate - A faster pace than Gear 1 and an established technique is key, but if necessary a little more recovery time for those that need it.
Gear 2 - A faster pace gained through technique. There will be less recovery time.

This is your opportunity to have a go at Nordic Walking and discover just how beneficial it can be for you.
Nordic Walking is suitable for all levels of ability including those who are new to outdoor walking and those with health conditions. The poles provide propulsion and stability. Nordic Walking is very flexible and you are able to walk at a pace that is comfortable for you.
Poles are provided for this 30 minute session.Please aim to arrive 5-10min before the start time so we can begin the session promptly.
This is an outdoor activity and you will need to bring appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather.Outdoor trainers or flexible-soled walking shoes are preferable.
If wet weather is expected, we advise water resistant/waterproof shoes or a change of socks/shoes. Waterproof jacket and trousers are advisable.In cold weather we recommend several layers that can be removed if required. In extreme cold weather hats and gloves (preferably walking or sports gloves) are desirable.In warm weather we recommend, sun hat, sun cream, insect repellent , long trousers/sleeves to guard against nettles/thorns/insects/ticks. Please bring a water bottle and snacks and a small back pack is useful for carrying them in. Please aim to arrive 5-10min before the start time so we can begin the session promptly.

The POWER OF THE POLES Induction process is suitable for all levels and is a structured teaching programme. There are 2 Courses of one and a half hours each. Course 1 is designed to provide sufficient knowledge for someone to be proficient at using poles. Course 2 is an optional further course for those wanting to explore a more in-depth knowledge of walking with poles and the traditional Nordic Technique. I will help you to understand your current level of fitness and empower you to use poles at the correct intensity in order to get the results you want.
These courses will ensure you master the technique of using poles and change the way you walk for life. Course 1 will cover the following:
Mastering the power of Fitness Walking polesGear 1: Mastering the arm swing, upper body engagement and pole plant angle.
Gear 2: Gaining propulsion from the pole and toe push, adapting pole position for hills and tailoring technique to your fitness, mobility and personal goals.
You will experience different poles types, the core ledge and straps in order to select the technique and poles that are right for YOU!
At the end of this session, you will have a full understanding of using poles correctly and be at a level where you will be issued with the NWUK Freedom Passport, allowing you to join walks & classes.
Dress to suit the weather, ensuring that you have suitable footwear. Please bring water in a small rucksack or bumbag, so that your hands are free. All poles are provided

Evening walk after a day at home or in the office. This session is an hours brisk walk to help to switch off at the end of the day. It is a brisk one hour walk, with few stops. It will be at a steady consistent pace so ideal for building your cardio fitness!!
It is a social walk so you will have the distraction of chatting whilst exercising.
During the winter months head torches are essential so YOU can be seen as the route tends to be off the Comyn. During the lighter evenings there is more opportunity to take this session over fields and farmland.

Brisk and Burning
Nordic Walking can quickly build your general fitness, but adding some specific exercises will help you to perform better and keep improving your fitness.
In these walks we will do interval sessions (alternating between fast (gear 3, speedhyking) and slow (gear 2) Nordic Walking and hill drills in combination with muscular strength and endurance exercises. But we will also pay attention to balance and coordination in a variety of exercises.
This is for members with a Nordic Walking UK FREEDOM passport.
