This varied route with great views starts out from the quiet village of Kirkby Overblow picking up the track towards Spofforth. It then heads north past Parks Farm, Sunrise Lakes and Sunrise Farm, before dropping back down into the village. At 4.3 miles, the walk takes around an hour and forty five minutes.

Note 10.20am  meet up for a prompt 10.30am start. Miriam's Friday Monthly Meander is an easy/moderate pace walk of around 4 miles, ideal for those who who would like to build their distance and stamina to a point that they can join Workout Walks and longer Adventure Walks. The walks are based in countryside locations easily accessed from the East Lancashire Road (A580) or M56/M60/M62/M61 corridors.  Get some great Nordic Walking exercise, fresh air and chat! When allowed/feasible there is an optional brew stop at a local cafe or pub after the walk or sometimes a bring your own mid walk 'Rucksack cafe'.  

THIS MONTH - Exploring the Sankey Valley Way & Sankey Brook. Join Miriam on this 4 mile circular walk. Our route starts in the “New Town” part of Warrington and follows Sankey Valley Way, a traffic free route which follows the line of the Sankey Canal, parts of which are still very visible, towardsNewton-Le-Willows. We return through fields and alongside Sankey Brook. The field part of this route may be muddy following heavy rain so come prepared with appropriate footwear. We are only a few minutes drive from M&S and Ikea if you want to extend your day! No Toilet facilities available on this walk, however there are facilities at Burtonwood Services off junction 8 of the M62 if you want to stop off either before or after the walk.  

Meeting point – Sankey Valley Way Car Park at the end of Tenby Close, Callands, Warrington WA5 9SG. Leave the M62 at junction 9. Follow A49 Winwick Road, Warrington for ½ mile. At the roundabout, turn right onto Cromwell Avenue A574. After approx 3/4 mile at the roundabout turn left onto Callands Road, then first left into St David’s Drive. Take 5th turning left into Tenby Close, approx. 1/4 mile. Follow Tenby Close (do not take side turns) to the end and the car park which is adjacent to the Sankey Valley Way. Parking is free.

What 3 Words - ///soft.flats.bench will take you to the car park at the end of Tenby Drive. 

Google Maps - enter Tenby Close, Callands, Warrington into Google maps or simply the postcode WA5 9SG and then follow Tenby Drive to the end (do not take side turns) and the car park.  

PLEASE NOTE, you need to have your own poles to attend this walk as no poles will be available for hire on the day unless by prior arrangement.

Walk Description:

Enjoy the huge open space of Salisbury Plain and the sound of the larks. Long gentle inclines on turf and hard tracks. The exact route will be defined by army maneuvers on the day but it will include a long gentle incline up the grassy training gallops. This incline is ideal to establish a good rhythm, it can be used to improve cardio fitness and or intervals. This walk is between 3 and 4 miles and therefore time may vary accordingly.  

Gear 1 - A nice, easy and natural pace that you can do for extended periods with recovery periods where appropriate. Short hills might be introduced. 

Gear 2 - A faster pace gained through technique. There will be less recovery time.

We will meet at the top end of the Crow Point car park at 11.00am and then take a gentle stroll out onto the beach. Depending on wind direction and strength, we will either walk around the point or cut through the middle. We might walk back along the Board Walk if we get that far, otherwise we will just return along the shoreline.

Walk Description:

This is a lovely walk in the oposite direction to the rings heading towards Charlton Marshall. Other than the first bit at the school it is a flat walk and you can start to look at your distance. Everyone can join in on any week or as and when you can however you will get more out of it starting at either 3 or 4 miles pending your abilities so that you can work towards the next mile gently. 

We are starting at 3 miles and will build as follow:

Walk Description:

The POWER OF THE POLES Induction process is suitable for all levels and is a structured teaching programme. There are 2 Courses of one and a half hours each. Course 1 is designed to provide sufficient knowledge for someone to be proficient at using poles. Course 2 is an optional further course for those wanting to explore a more in-depth knowledge of walking with poles and the traditional Nordic Technique. I will help you to understand your current level of fitness and empower you to use poles at the correct intensity in order to get the results you want.

These courses will ensure you master the technique of using poles and change the way you walk for life. Course 1 will cover the following:

Mastering the power of Fitness Walking poles

Gear 1: Mastering the arm swing, upper body engagement and pole plant angle.

Gear 2: Gaining propulsion from the pole and toe push, adapting pole position for hills and tailoring technique to your fitness, mobility and personal goals.

You will experience different poles types, the core ledge and straps in order to select the technique and poles that are right for YOU!

At the end of this session, you will have a full understanding of using poles correctly and be at a level where you will be issued with the NWUK Freedom Passport, allowing you to join walks & classes.

Dress to suit the weather, ensuring that you have suitable footwear. Please bring water in a small rucksack or bumbag, so that your hands are free. All poles are provided
